Best practice for using SSDs with Lightroom?
Sep 14, 2011

I'm looking for some advice on using SSDs with Lightroom.

I've got about 1TB of RAW images. As life goes, I spend most of my time accessing and processing recent photos and I'd like to speed up the Lightroom processing of my photos. Most of my time in LR is spent going through a shoot one photos at a time (often sports), setting a rating, marking for deletion and tweaking the keepers. There's more time than I'd like going from one image to the next in LR and I was hoping that speeding up disk access might improve that time.

I don't intend to put all my photos on SSD, but have been wondering if I could gain a significant advantage if I put my recent photos (say the last 6 months worth) on SSD and perhaps also put the LR catalog on an SSD.

Is there any sort of best practice for using internal SSDs with LR? Any data on how much difference it can make compared to internal SATA drives? I've got a tower box with many drive bays and a quad-core CPU so I've got expansion options.
