Kit 18-55mm better than Sigma 17-70mm, Tamron 17-50, and Canon 15-85mm?

@Gtung99 -- thanks for your comments. This thread is of great interest to me because I've pondered getting the Sigma or Tamron stabilized lens as my primary "everyday" lens. They're about the same price, f / 2.8, and so much cheaper than the $1,100 Canon that the Canon isn't even a consideration. $650 would be a stretch; $1,100 is impossible and ridiculous.

The review sites seem to go either way on the Sigma and Canon. I've got a Canon 15 – 85mm f / 4.0, which is nice but could be better in low natural light. And I almost never use the 50 – 85mm range; maybe five times total, or five times when I couldn't simply move closer to the subject. So I think I'm paying with stops for a zoom I don't use.
