Lighting makes all the difference

A friend of mine and I were out the other day practicing moving photography for motorcycles. It was an overcast day, with little bits of sun in the late afternoon.

I snapped a few random shots while goofing around.

The first was taken with the sun up and to the right, behind my friend. As you can see, it's really washed out and blah looking.

The second one was taken with the sun behind me in the late afternoon, front-lighting my friend. (please disregard the angle - I literally snapped this randomly without even using the viewfinder; lucky unintentional shot I guess).

At least to me, the second picture looks much more vibrant and clear than the first.
