A77 and older or cheaper lens

As late as 3 weeks ago there was a lot of discussion about older and/or cheaper lens providing insufficient resolution for the 24 mp sensor. That particular discussion seems to have died off, am I just missing those threads, did someone prove the argument one way or the other? I'm a working stiff so I don't have the time to read all the threads and still eat, sleep and take pictures in my spare time.
