7D vs my old 40D

I have a 40D. I know it is a little out dated but takes pretty good pictures of the kids playing their sports, specifically hockey.
I am wondering if any one out their has experience with both of these cameras. If so can you tell me if an up grade is worth wild and why.
I shoot slot of hockey and some out door sports. Thx
