Check histograms; final recovered image
In reply to Horshack, Sep 4, 2011

There is info above midtone for pillow and below midtone for bags. Our vision plays games when most of image is dark or when most is bright. And there's also the possibility that the brighter image has some flare making it look flatter and brighter than it actually was.

Now here is 1/1000s f/5.6 shot recovered to show more or less what I saw from the camera spot. D7k seems to be able to do a fairly good job, not sure if any other Nikon besides D3x has same recovery abilities and can deal with such a high DR scene.

1/1000s, f/5.6, conv/recov in ACR, some local adjustment in CNX2, no NR at any stage.

Thanks for the photos. The 1/4000 f/5.6 and 2s f/2.8 photos are 16EV apart in exposure yet the subject matter between the two (pillow in 1/4000 shot, bags in 2s shot) do not appear to be exposed at equal EVs for their respective photos (pillow is darker in the 1/4000 shot than the bags are in the 2s shot). This implies a less than 16EV difference between the two. I'm basing this on visual inspection of the JPEGs alone.
