Hey,

I think you should buy Canon's "Circular Polarizing Filter", a.k.a. "PL-C", and for your lens, I think the filter size would be 58mm. It improves colour saturation and blocks harmful reflected light from, for example, glass & water.

Hope this is something which helps you, apart from the hoods, which you said, you were going to try anyways :)))).

[P.S.: I don't OWN a camera NOW, but I'm buying 550D soon, so have an idea 'bout these filters. :P]
