Bought F550 EXR

ok I bought 2 weeks ago the 550exr but I dont know what settings to use for P mode as I dont know anything about photography. Should do some landscapes and as well some night architecture shootings...anyone can help ?

My son is buying the Canon EOS 550 DSLR and was thinking about getting myself a D90 Nikon ....since am not a pro should I leave the Fuji and go for a DSLR ?
