canon 85mm f1.8 or 100mm f2
Aug 26, 2011

I'm looking to get a new/used portrait lens. I'd like to get a lens that that creates good Bokeh. My price range is around $400. I currently have the canon 24-105L, 70-200 F4 L & a 50mm F1.8 on a Canon 60D

I've read great reviews on both the 85mm F1.8 and the 100mm F2.0 but am torn on which one to get. Since I have the 50mm will the 85mm be too close to the same focal length? will there be much bokeh difference between the 50mm & 85mm?

The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens but needs to be stopped down to F2.8 to be sharp. Sometimes I get sharp images at 1.8 but the keeper rate is pretty low. at F2.8 the keeper rate is much better.

I can get nice Bokeh with the 70-200 at 200mm F4 but many times I can't get back far enough to shoot at 200mm.

The Bokeh on the 24-105L is OK but nothing exciting. The 24-105 needs to be stopped down to F5.6 to get really sharp images so that really hurts trying to get nice Bokeh.
