Room lighting can vary tremendously. In daylight, I have enough light in my living room to shoot at apertures like f3.2. At night, lighting is low enough so that I need high ISOs and f2.
I use the Canon 35f2 or 50f1.4 for indoor shots when lighting is low - no flash.

If there is enough lighting in the house, I can get by with f4, but that is not always the case. You may benefit from a fast prime like the Canon 35f2.
