What do you do with your photographs?

The other day I was at the local transfer station (dump) disposing of some garbage when I saw, in the bin, a large box of 35mm slides. On closer inspection there were hundreds of slides and 8mm movies labelled with dates, events and names.
Here was someone's vision of the world and events of their life - in the trash. It started me thinking about my images. the family history that I have collected as the family photographer, the slices of time and history I have captured that can never be repeated, the emotions recorded and the lives of people I love, all on a hard drive. I went home and backed up all my images and thought about when I am no longer here, what will happen to my efforts? How can I make these images available to others in a meaningful way?
So my questions to you are -
What do you do with your pictures? How do you make the family history accessible and meaningful to your family? Will it all end up in the garbage one day?
I don't want my pictures to.
