Bringing FX down...
Aug 17, 2011

Look at Nikon's history of sensor development. Until the D3100 and D7000 showed up, the sensors migrated from high end to entry level.

The D7000 is pretty impressive. The D90 is left out on a limb, as is the D300s.

So. D90 replacement = 12Mp with video FX. D3S, cheap body.
D300s replacement professional APS-C 24Mp.

Currently both positions are being cannibalised by the rather excellent D7000.

No insider information, just thinking aloud about what a four-figure "prosumer" DSLR (which is what the D90 started out as) could offer to stand out and leave the D7000 as a relevant body; and what it is is a plastic bodied D700s with SD-card storage in essence. Something to break a market point using existing available tech, perhaps with lower-rated ISO for cheaper, higher-yield sensors.

(I'd love to be right, I'm probably very wrong).
