Leica M9 vs. Canon 5D

This is probably an unfair comparison but during a recent trip a friend shot pictures with his Leica M9, while I shot using my Canon 5D (not MkII). I am not a pro by any stretch and he admittedly has more photography experience. In every case his shots had more saturation, deeper sky color as well as other characteristics that made for a superior picture (viewed straight from the cameras, on an iMac, before any Photo-Shop). We both shot jpeg. I tried various picture styles to see if that made a difference – not. I used the Canon 24-70 f2.8 lens while he used his Leica 70mm f2.0 lens. I even tried a Polarizing Filter to enhance the colors – his still won hands down. Admittedly his camera body alone cost more than my entire camera + lenses, but I expected better. Any suggestions or comments – short of buying a Leica?
