HS20: Handheld at 720mm???
Aug 15, 2011

I am considering the Fuji HS20 for nature photography. In reviewing HS20 threads in this forum, I have some concern about using the camera handheld at full telephoto.

I've had experience with Panasonic superzooms that have excellent image stabilization (IS). My old FZ30 (420mm max) can give me a 2 or more stop advantage at full zoom.

The HS20's 720mm lens is very attractive to me for nature photography, but it's much less attractive if I have to carry a tripod/monopod or I have to boost shutter speed (and often ISO) significantly to make up for an IS that really can't handle 720mm.

What's your experience with the HS20 handheld at full zoom?

I hope people who respond to my question understand that I am NOT trying to criticize the HS20's IS system. I understand that it's harder for a camera IS to compensate at 720mm than it is at 420mm. However, if the camera can't successfully handle 720mm, then it's not going to work for me handheld.

Thanks,
