70-200 F2.8 VR versions I & II advise please
Aug 13, 2011

I currently shoot about 50/50 with a DX D300 or an FX D3.

I'm looking for a new medium tele zoom to replace my old 80-200 f2.8

I have the choice of picking up a mint version I 70-200 F2.8 VR for nearly £700 less than a new mark II version. Trouble is, people I speak to say it would be a poor performer on the D3. I know there's been a lot of discussions over this, but can anyone that actually used both on FX give me their opinion. I'm sure the guys that are giving me the "advise" have just read it somewhere but haven't actually shot with both lenses.

I know that on the D300 either will be superb, but what's the earlier one like on FX, is it really as bad as everyone seems to say or are the issues overhyped? Whilst I don't mind paying the extra for a new MK II version, I'd like to make sure the extra £700 could actually be seen in the photos ?

Any advise gratefully received.
Forget the make, use your camera, take pictures...
