My new OS HSM Bigma arrived.
Aug 12, 2011

Hi folks,

I received the new Sigma 50-500mm OS HSM (Bigma) today. I am only writing my first impressions here. No images yet.

  • Catch-in-Focusing (focus trap) works like a champ on my K-5.

  • Autofocusing and lock on is extremely fast, and I do mean FAST. My first experience with this FAST autofocus and lock on startled me because I wasn't expecting this. I can see that this is going to be fun.

  • The Sigma teleconverters will not work with this lens.

  • The Tamron-F 1.4X PZ_Af (also Kenko 1.5X PZ_Af) teleconverter works similar to the way it works on SDM lenses. Requires two or three half-presses of the shutter button to get focus lock.

  • The images on the LCD looks sharp to me. The color seems just a tad warm.

  • At the 200mm focal length the minimum focusing distance is 2 feet (0.6 meters) and produces a 1:3.1 Macro.

  • The optical stabiization (OS) switch has three positions. Off, #1 for both vertical and horizontal stabiization, and #2 for vertical stabiization. Use #2 for panning.

I have a gut feeling that tracking birds in flight (BIFs) in the AF-C mode is going to be a snap with this lens. I am going to venture to say right now that this lens will probably work better than any other lens I own for tracking BIFs.

I am excited to have this lens to play with. I will post images as soon as I can.

Cheers.

Ron
