D7000 Lens suggestion needed

OK- I've been out of the Nikon scene for a while, but we (wife and I) upgraded our old Canon D20 to a zippy new Nikon D7000 with the Nikon 18-105VR lens. Outstanding instrument so far and having fun with it. (she's got the photographer's eye, and I know how to use all the features- so we're kind of a team)

In search of a nice, bright wider angle zoom. For the old D20, we've got the stellar Canon 10-22mm lens. We don't necessarily need that wide (although it's nice), but certainly something wider than the 18mm ( 28mm effective) has to offer.

Price is flexible. The last little bit of resolution in a corner isn't all that critical, but our priorities are feel, operation, focus speed and brightness.

What are some good suggestions?
