GF3 Weird Focus "band." What is that?!
Aug 11, 2011

Just got my Panny GF3 and I love the way it handles. Went riding around town to take some random pictures and get used to it. I found some rice paddy frogs littering the road and couldn't resist. When I got home, I found this weird band on several of the pictures. What I mean is there's a very obvious band in the picture that's in focus, while the rest isn't. I'm wondering what this is. Is it the way the camera focuses? I also noted that even though the camera put the green focus box specifically on the frog, the frog is very much not in focus. I had assumed what I would see is the frog itself in focus, but the background not. Instead, there's that band. Am I making a noob mistake (quite likely)?

Here's the best example. You can see if you zoom in near the frog's feet, a very clear line below where the focus changes. Can someone explain to me what this is and how to avoid it?

This picture was taken using iAuto with the 14mm pancake lens.
