Using Attached Flash In M Mode

I have been moving more and more to shooting in Manual mode on my K-x so that I take total control of the pics and have had great success but when I attach my Vivitar Df-383 TTL flash and meter using the green button, which I usually do to get me close prior to adjusting to my preferences, it will inevitably send the exposure compensation to -3 stops. Is this normal when attaching a flash in M and metering ? I assume as much and kinda expect it to underexpose to compensate for the added light from flash but just wanted to ask the question.
