It's interesting that John also said don't do that unless you're blowing highlights, so, I suspect he's always been speaking from that unstated assumption. I've come across this before. Someone says they have come up with a revolutionary way of setting exposure parameters, and when you get down to what they actually do, they're just avoiding blown highlights while maximising the luminous exposure. Pretty much the same as good ETTR.
