70-200/2.8 + TC20 vs. 300/4 AF-S + TC14

I guess the title says it all. I'm looking for a an option to achieve 400 mm focal length with reasonable quality. Who has experience with both the 70-200/2.8 VR(II) and the 300/4 AF-S at 400 mm and can offer some insight into how they compare at that setting?

To be honest, I'd love to get them both, but that's not going to happen. So, I'd like to figure out how they compare to make an informed decision. Both would have applications other than at the 400 mm setting (the 70-200/2.8 is obviously a great general purpose telezoom, and I'd use the 300/4 for close-up photography with extension tubes).

One possible caveat is that the TC-20EIII seems to be quite a bit better than the EII generation, so the TC-14EII may also be in for an optical upgrade... but I'm wondering whether the 300 + TC combo is better even with the EII generation converter...

Thanks!
