Help! MacBook is full!

Hello,

I've tried searching the forums here but my problem in short is that my disc is full (well 4GB wiggle room.) Mainly all from my photos in iPhoto. My MacBook is a few years old and has approx 120GB. My dad and husband both say I should just dump the library onto a hard drive but I'm worried that I won't be able to easily access my photos anymore. Is that difficult? Not sure if I can add more GB to my current laptop or if I need to upgrade systems whenever I can. (This could be a while though.) Any good temporary ideas? I can't even get it to import more photos, not to mention the laptop is just plain not working well. I was also thinking of switching to Aperture which seems to be recommended here.
