I agree that the 15-85 is worth a look

I have both the 28-70L and the 24-105, on a 5D so the lengths are different.

I have hardly picked up the 24-105 since I got the 28-70L - infact I'll only ever pick it up if I don't want to carry two lenses (28-70L + 135L)

Stopped down to f4 the 28-70 is pretty much perfect, at f2.8 it still amazes me, and is certainly sharp, but f4 has a real POP to it. The 24-105 get a bit of a contrast boost at f5.6 but is still quite good at f4, I don't hesitate to shoot either lens wide open

if your after the extra length, theres no way around the 24-105

IS is less of an issue with shorter focal lengths, you'll find people move alot more than your hands shake at 24mm if your pushing 1/30th as a "safe" speed...
