Am I normal? Canon EF 50 mm

I recently purchased a new Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens for my 550D. It appears to focus properly but none of the red focus dots light up at all. Is that normal for this type of lens? They light up for my other lens. Anyone know what the problem is?
