This idea goes back to the early days of photography.

Our camera club had the privilege of being able to design their own studio in a council building over 100 years ago. This has a huge window as well as a large window covering half the ceiling. Blinds were fitted to get some control of light direction.

The window faces South (we are in the Southern Hemisphere) same design would face North in the NH. This means that the sun does not shine directly in at any time.

Re your colour. If the only light source is the sun shining on the fabric it will be too red. Normal daylight is a combination of sunlight and reflected skylight.

Use a custom white balance and your colour will be fine.
