D3100 with 18-55mm & 55-200mm OR D5100 with 18-55mm?
Jul 30, 2011

Hi all. This is my first post on dpreview so good to be part of this forum. I've had a good dig round here but can't find a thread which answers my question.

Basically, I want to buy my first DSLR, and I have read up about the D3100 and D5100, obviously the D5100 is a better body. My question is though, should I get the lower spec D3100 twin lens kit that comes with the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses or go for the D5100 which only comes with the 18-55mm lens?

I can get either for about the same price. As I mentioned this will be my first DSLR. I did have in the year 2001 a Canon EOS 300 with a Tamron 28-105mm lens, and I'm not sure if it is compatible with the EOS 600D (which I am also considering) because for around the same price of both of the Nikon bundles I am able to get the 600D body with a 18-55mm lens, and possibly use the Tamron lens I already have from my old film EOS (if the lens is compatible that is).

I'm having a really hard time choosing between these bundles and cameras. I thought someone on here might be able to help me out. I want to focus on portrait and landscape photography. As I mentioned, I have a limited budget. Any advise is much appreciated.

Thanks - Craig
