50mm prime lens on APS sensor - same compression benefits as ~80mm lens on FF?
Jul 28, 2011

This is bothering me because I read it in what is otherwise a respectable book. Maybe I'm tired. The suggestion was that a 50mm prime lens on an APS sensor camera would effectively result in 75-80mm focal length. I well-understand that. I have a hard time digesting the suggestion it then makes that this increased "telephoto effect will compress your subject slightly, which is flattering" by virtue of this longer effective focal length. My understanding has been that it's simply a crop of an image created with a 50mm lens and so whether FF or APS, any compression benefits are perfectly equal. Am I wrong?

Thanks-
