First Attempt at Some Backyard Birds

Here are a couple of examples at my first attempts at capturing some pictures of birds that frequent my backyard feeder. Please let me know what you think and how I might improve either my technique or post processing. The pictures were taken with my D90 and the 70-300mm f45.-5.6 AF-S G VR lens. I used a tripod.

My identification skills could use some work, but I think this first picture is a catbird.

The second picture is a house finch, I think. It could be a purple finch, but I'm not entirely sure. Maybe some one with more knowledge can tell for sure.
