35 mm prime vs kit 18-55 zoom as sole vacation lens?

I'm going on vacation to Europe with my wife soon. We'll be visiting some major cities along some ocean/countryside viewpoints. It'll be mostly a mix of scenery pics vs pics of me and my wife etc. Probably a majority of outdoor daytime pics, although probably we'll do some indoor stuff at museums and maybe some night shots. We'd like to pack as light as possible, so we're debating bringing only 1 of the following lenses:

a) 35 mm DX AF-S f/1.8
b) 18-55 mm DX AF-s f/3.5-5.6 VR

We have a d5000, and are just really starting out on learning how to take better pics. Looking at my old EXIF data, most of the pics we took were either at 18 mm or 55 mm focal length (just bought the prime). So, it might be an adjustment sticking to 35 mm.

On the other hand, the 35 mm is a little more portable and is supposed to be better in low light. A majority of my old pics were at f 5.6, and the prime is much better than the zoom at that aperture...

Thanks in advance...
