HDR? NEX 5 does HDR? Really?

I've been toying with my camera to see how it does HDR and all I can see that it does is make one picture brighter or darker than the other by a very small step as that is; I am not convinced it can do HDR although I have looked at some HDR photos and my camera is not producing what an HDR should look like or am I doing something wrong? Or do I still have to put it together?
IIRC an HDR is two images overlayed one image is a bit over exposed the other is under exposed marrying the two you get an HDR?
