I think iPod/mp3 player is more suited to the task. My guess is the audio amp in some phone are not good enough. It need to be able to do 18000hz signal, since most of the infared is in the 36000hz region. Also you may need to turn the volume up for range?

For time lapse the iPod is better too since it can last all day especially on mostly empty sound. Just record blank mp3/wave file for the duration you need and let it play shoot and blank repeatedly. Blank mp3 is easy to creat and very small due to compression.

Playlist of shoot, blank,blank..... To control duration using duration playlists.
