Epson 989 printing delay

I have a 9880 printer and is it normal to wait 20 min. till the printer starts printing a 30x40 canvas? I have noticed this since I got it and thought it was long especially when I put a 16x20 through my 4880 and it starts immediately. I know there is a file size difference, but should it take that long to load to the printer buffer?
