Would this laptop work ok with external monitor?

It's a Dell XPS 15.6 laptop. I would use it with an external monitor for photo editing using LR3 and PSE9, and raw files. I'd use an external drive for additional storage & backup.
Connect it to a monitor for photo editing, use alone when on the go, that's the idea. After coupons, it's $1400. Here's the specs...
