HX9V - is this the best I can get?
Jul 13, 2011

I got the HX9V few days ago. Still playing with it and mostly like for the combination of great video and good quality snapshots. But my hope this to be my main camera seem unrealistic. Just for fun I decided to shoot the moon and was surprised by the low quality shots I got. It was a very clear night. I tried manual and auto focus with the same result. Seems like the JPEG algorithm kills any trace of fine detail. Here is a sample and then a comparison to my 6y old 5Mpx Canon S2 with similar zoom.

HX9V: ISO100, 5.9, 1/250, 384mm, re-sized to 5Mpx and then cropped to almost 100% to be comparable to the S2:

Canon S2: ISO50, 4.0, 1/800, 420mm, 100% crop.

I was frankly shocked to see such difference. Can anybody try to shoot the moon and report results. Maybe my camera had focusing or other problems. I noticed other full zoom shots being quite soft or with missed focus as well.

Thank you!
