G3: why is jpeg file 45mb?

Just wondering (from dpreview review) why a jpeg is 45mb from this 16mp sensor. The sensor on my E620 is essentially the same physical dimension but only 12mp. Yet I think the SHQ jpegs are under 10mb. (I could be wrong, but if they are over 10mb it's not by much.)
Hope that's a sign of just how high quality the new pany file is ... (tongue in cheek)
