430 EXII flash won't shut off when 7D does

Canon 7D; review time set @ 1 minute;
flash on ETTL works OK but red pilot light
doesn't shut off after 1 minute; as a result
rechargeable AA batteries die after several
hours as opposed to days later; turning off
camera between shots temporary solution;
did I press something without knowing it?
Advice appreciated! This is a new issue
starting when I arrived in Tokyo!
