Epson Stylus Photo 1280 worth trying to unclog?

I've not kept up with photo printers. I have this old 1280 I just took out of the box after 3 years of non use. Oh yeah it's good and clogged.
Have printers advanced so far ahead of this guy that I should just go drop $300 to $500 on a new one instead of wasting my time buying new ink, unclogging this one?
Do the new ink cartriges replace the heads on Epsons (Like HP used to do) or do all the new ones clog up too?
I'm looking at the Epson R2880 as an upgrade. Don't really care about wireless printing.
