question about distortion and focal length

This shot was taken with the Canon EF-S 15-85mm at 15mm on a 7D (1.6x crop factor). Looking closely you can see in the upper right the rock formations are tilted slightly to the right, and on the upper left the trees are leaning slightly to the left. Is this distortion primarily due to the wide-angle focal length, or the distortion characteristics specific to this lens?

What could I do to minimize this distortion next time? Stepping back and then zooming in would not have been possible due to the terrain here. Would a full frame camera and increased focal length (relative to my current 15mm on a crop camera) have shown less distortion? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
