Selection and layer mask

Hello, could I please ask for your help? Can you check the following tutorial regarding creating contrast mask and advise how do I apply the selection created by Difference onto the layer mask? It is the step number 5. I am not able to get the selection into the layer mask by pressing Delete and then Deselect. PS version is CS3. The tutorial is probably for a different version, not sure.
