50mm f/1.8G or 35mm f/1.8 DX prime?

A lot of people are making this a personal decision. I don't think that is the case.

It's really quite simple.

If you shoot indoors a lot the 35mm will be better for you.

If you prefer shooting outdoors the 50mm will be better.

Build quality is the same for both lenses. And ultimately either one will be a great first prime that will perform very well on your D5100.

P.S. I did a photo shoot today that was both inside and outside. Inside I used the 35mm and outside I was using an 80-200. Typically speaking I prefer longer lenses but, indoors that often isn't an option.
