Serious Editing on a MacBookPro

Is this a fool's errand?

My current (PC) laptop screen is driving me crazy so I'm considering one of three things:

Get a good external monitor. Cons - I like editing on my couch and bed.

Get a new PC laptop with good monitor. Cons - the only "good" monitors seem to be the IPS panels a few business machines have and they cost even more than a MBP.

Get a MacBook Pro. Cons - I'm not an Apple person and would be getting it solely for the screen, so if the screen isn't really "all that" then it would be a waste. Unless someone can convince me otherwise.

So, does anyone do the majority of their editing on a MBP without an external? Is it fast enough? Enough memory? A good screen?
