A300 Camera error. Help!!!

Does anyone know if you are able to do a full reset on the A300 and not just the default reset in the menu which still leaves the date and time ok.
My A300 has started showing the error in the A or M mode but is ok on all other settings. So to me it looks like a software bug and not a mechanical problem. I have also tried it on differant speed setting but sitll the same. There seems to be nothing on the net about a firmware default reset.
