Canon 17-40 mm L F4.0 lens

Hello
Want to buy the aboive for taking pictures inside cathedrals etc in Europe and buildings in Istanbul.
Have read that it is soft at cornes at 40mm.
16-35 mm f2.8 is too expensive.....
What has your experience been in using this lens for indoor photography.
