If the ' pure whites' are all in fact the same value, the simplest way to acheive a switch is...
Select menu - Color Range..

Use eyedropper to select the whites (sampled colors)- hit OK -PS will make an automatic mask...

Go to Edit- fill ,select 'color' from the drop down menu pick whatever color you want from color picker (in this case RED)- hit OK.
Presto Change o ...Whites turn Red

IF you have different value 'whites' ...hold the shift key as you select each white and PS will add each to your initial selection, and proceed as above from there.

The color range dialogue box gives you many options including inverting the selection, adding to it, and subtracting from it.

You can also go to Edit-fade afterward, and lighten the selection color if you wish.
