Shallow DOF vs obliterating the background
Jun 16, 2011

I am known to some as a photographer who enjoys shallow DOF and strong background blur. However, there's a significant difference, methinks, between making use of shallow DOF to isolate the subject and using shallow DOF / background blur to obliterate the background entirely.

That is, I understand wishing to isolate the subject from a background filled with distractions. But this is all together different than turning the background into an featureless blur, where the context of the scene is entirely lost.

Thus, what I'm looking for in this thread, is for people to post, or link to, examples that show examples of DOF / background blur that are "too extreme", "not enough", and "just right", to see exactly what "too extreme", "not enough", and "just right" mean to different people.
