EF vs EF-S on a crop camera

I'm not sufficiently clear on the issues, either positive and/or negative associated with using an "EF" lens on a "crop camera. I have the 550D, and am considering an EF lens...but I want to make sure I fully understand any risks or benefits (if any). Thanks very much!!
