The Ural Owl - a forest ghost IRL
Jun 9, 2011

The Ural Owl (Strix uralensis) is very uncommon species in Norway, a solitary rare bird, a ghostlike mysterious creature, scarcely inhabiting the Fennoscandian forests (Nor/Swe/Fin), the westernmost part of its propagation, which carries on throughout the big boreal taiga to the east. It's a truly impressive bird, w/ a wingspan up to 130cm, but so cautious, so evasive and rare. That said, they are aggressively defending the nest while the eggs/chickens are still in it, but once the chickens are out, they're back to being a sheer ghost again. So last weekend we resorted to a nesting habitat in Sweden (although close to the Norwegian border), to see whether we could get a glimpse of this magnificent creature in the wild. We found some newly fledged chickens, and got some far fetched and short lived glimpses of the adults as well.
