motherboard crashed unable to retrieve all photo files from hard drive

have put HD in ext enclosure and connected to my laptop. old desktop was windows XP, laptop is Vista.
old HD shows 25 gigs free space which is what is was when in the old desktop.
problem is not all photo files are on HD. had about 125 gigs of photo files on HD and now it shows only about 9 gigs.
tried searching for a known file but unable to locate it.
most of the programs are on HD like canon zoombrowser but not Lightroom.
don't understand why drive is showing properties like when it was in desktop but cannot locate all photo files.
