Check a depth of field online calculator. Look at the depth of field with a 85mm lens at f1.4 with a subject at a distance of 8 feet. Check the DOF at f2.8 with the same lens and same camera to subject distances.

When you are photographing people moving about you need fast autofocus and more depth of field.

The 85mm is a very slow to autofocus lens. The slowest Nikon lens I have ever used and slower even than the 80-400mm zoom.

For DX cameras the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 is a better choice and for DX cameras something like the 24-70mm or 24-120mm are better choices.
