You are the first person I have heard of to complain about underexposure. Usually the camera overexposes in auto mode.

No matter, ev compensation is available in auto mode - you do not go to 'M' mode. To make it easy to set ev compensation, set the 'custom' button on the top to be ev. Then whatever mode you go into, you press that button and can set the ev the way you want, which appears to be +.3 or +.6. Convenient and fast.
